2017 Zinfandel

  • Tasting Notes

Dark ruby in color. Aromas of dark berry fruits, gravel earth, black licorice, mint are woven with top-notes of exotic spices. The palate is perfectly balanced with flavors of raspberry and fig, well-defined tannins and textures of nutmeg flesh, together complimenting the medium acidity that leads into a long, complex finish.

  • Vineyard Notes

Harvest 2017 was quite the year for winemaking in Sonoma County and provided Demostene Vineyards with a strong vintage of Alexander Valley old vine Zinfancel grapes. The historic drought which has plagued the region for several harvests was broken in a big way with almost triple the normal rainfall during the year!

The pace of the growing season started off about two weeks behind normal and we had no frost events. Yet, an unusually warm June and July brought us back to back to normal progression of grape maturity. The first part of August brought some cooler nights with the return of the fog slowing the ripening of the fruit. After an extreme heat wave at the end of August the Zinfandel was picked at the optimum brix level on the night of August 31st.

  • Winemaking Notes

This vintage is made from 100% Zinfandel that is sustainable farmed in the Alexander Valley Appellation. The fruit was carefully selected, and night harvested at the exact moment when the fruit reached the right maturity and acidity levels to craft an elegant style of Zinfandel. The grapes were delivered to Punchdown Cellars on the morning of August 31, 2017.

The fruit was destemmed and put in an open top tank to ferment on the skins. The grapes were cold soaked for several days and then pumped over, twice a day through the fermentation process in a stainless tank. After fermentation, the grapes were pressed and the wine was barreled in 10% new French Oak and 90% neutral French Oak for 18 months. The Zinfandel was filtered and bottled on February 20, 2019.

Bricoleur Vineyards limited-production 2017 Zinfandel showcases the artisan craftsmanship of our winemaker, Cary Gott, and the terroir of the Demostene Vineyards grapes from the Alexander Valley.
