2017 Pinot Noir

Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

  • Tasting Notes

Medium ruby in color. Aromas of cranberry, deep raspberry, and Santa Rosa plum are woven with top-notes of anise and coastal redwood spice. The palate is perfectly balanced with flavors of cherry and peach pith, broad tannins and textures of stone fruit flesh. These flavors complement the bright acidity, which leads into a long, fresh finish.

  • Vineyard Notes

Harvest 2017 was quite the year for winemaking in Sonoma County and provided Bricoleur Vineyards with another elegant vintage of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. The historic drought which plagued the region for several harvests finally broke in a big way with almost three-times the normal rainfall during the growing season!

The pace of the growing season started off about two weeks behind normal with no frosts. Yet, an unusually warm June and July brought us back to normal progression of vine and grape development. The first part of August brought some cooler nights with the return of the coastal fog, slowing the ripening of the fruit. After an extreme heat wave at the end of August, the Pinot Noir was picked at the optimum ripeness on the night of August 31st.

  • Winemaking Notes

This vintage is made from 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir that is sustainable farmed in the Russian River Valley Appellation. The hand-picked fruit was carefully selected and night-harvested at the exact moment when the fruit reached the right maturity and acid levels to craft an elegant style of Pinot Noir. The grapes were delivered to Punchdown Cellars on the morning of August 31, 2017.

The fruit was destemmed and put in an open-top tank to ferment on the skins. The grapes were cold-soaked for several days and then punched-down twice a day throughout the fermentation process. After fermentation, the grapes were pressed and the wine was barreled in 30% new French oak and 70% neutral French oak for 15 months. This Pinot Noir is a combination of barrels from three different blocks on the Bricoleur Estate Vineyards. The Pinot Noir was bottled on November 19, 2018.

    Robert Parker

“The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard is medium ruby in the glass with a bright,
open nose of cranberry, warm red cherry
and pomegranate liqueur with underlying earthy accents of forest floor and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied, it gives good concentration of warm red fruits in the mouth with a grainy tannic frame and mouthwatering acidity, finishing just a tad warm. 461 cases produced.”
