Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

  • Tasting Notes

The structure and style is based on quintessential Russian River chardonnay; classic, elegant, and rich. The first thing you notice about the Bricoleur Vineyards Chardonnay is its beautiful medium straw color. The wine has a complex texture and crisp minerality. Notes of pear and lemon are accented by its rich texture and balanced acidity. It is produced from 100% Russian River Valley appellation estate-grown Chardonnay.

  • Vineyard Notes

Harvest 2017 was quite the year for winemaking in Sonoma County and provided Bricoleur Vineyards with another strong vintage of Russian River Valley Chardonnay grapes. The historic drought which has plagued the region for several harvests finally broke in a big way with almost triple the normal amount of rainfall that year!

The pace of the growing season started off about two weeks behind normal and we had no frost events. Yet, an unusually warm June and July brought us back to normal progression of grape maturity. The first part of August brought some cooler nights with the return of the fog, slowing the ripening of the fruit. After an extreme heat wave at the end of August, the Chardonnay was picked at the optimum Brix level on the night of August 31st.

  • Winemaking Notes

This vintage of Chardonnay is made from estate-grown Chardonnay, which is sustainably farmed in the Russian River Valley appellation. The hand-picked fruit was carefully selected and night-harvested at the exact moment when the fruit reached the right maturity and acid levels to craft an elegant, delicate style of Chardonnay. The grapes were delivered to Punchdown Cellars on the morning of August 31, 2017.

The grapes were whole cluster pressed. The resulting Chardonnay juice then settled for two days in a stainless tank and went through a three-week cool fermentation process. After fermentation, the grapes were pressed and the wine was barreled in 40% new French Oak and 60% neutral French Oak for ten months. The Chardonnay was bottled on August 10, 2018.

    Robert Parker

“The 2017 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard has an intense nose of buttered popcorn, lemon meringue, baked apples and tropical notes with toasty touches. Medium to full-bodied and creamy textured, it’s full and rich in the mouth with ripe tropical and stone fruits and loads of creamy accents, with just enough acidity to carry the finish. Big and buttery but well done for its style. 147 cases produced.”
